Position in Sociology
The Department of Sociology invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning August, 2008. Special consideration will be given to candidates whose research focuses on: health/mental health, aging, globalization, race/ethnicity, education, or crime/deviance. The ability to teach advanced quantitative methods at the graduate level is preferred. Commitment to research and publication, seeking external funding, and potential for excellence in teaching are required. Position in Africana Studies
The Africana Studies Program at Virginia Tech seeks a scholar/teacher in the
social science/humanities areas of Africana Studies beginning Fall of 2008. This position involves teaching of an
introductory course in Africana Studies at both the undergrad and grad levels,
as well as elective courses in areas of the instructor's expertise. A completed
Ph.D. is required. Africana/Black Studies or Ethnic Studies with significant
background in Africana/Black studies preferred. A completed Ph.D. in Political
Science, Psychology, Sociology, History, Literature, and Philosophy with a
significant background in Africana/Black Studies is acceptable.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with a growing
body of faculty scholars and graduate students at Virginia Tech engaged in
research in fields related to the intersection of race, gender and class in the
social sciences and the humanities. As well as, scholar-activist/social justice
research. Commitment to research and publication, seeking external funding, and
potential for excellence in teaching are required. The Africana Studies Program
at Virginia Tech is housed in the Sociology Department and is home to the
Center for Race and Social Policy. In addition, we have ongoing collaborations
with the Center for the Study of Violence in Society, the Center for
Gerontology, the Science and Technology Studies Program, the Center for Survey
Research, and the Women's Studies Program.
