Internship Program and Career Advising

Internship (Sociology 4754)

Through the internship program, students will gain practical experience that will enable
them to evaluate future employment opportunities and professional goals.  Students will
also learn to apply a sociological perspective to the internship experience. Each s tudent intern will work with a member of the faculty in the Department of Sociology.

Internship Requirements

  • You must be enrolled in the University the semester (including summer
    semester) you are interning.
  • Students must be Sociology majors or double majors, with Junior or Senior standing.
  • A student wishing to enroll must have an overall QCA of 2.0 and may not be on probation.
  • All internships must be approved in advance by the Departmental Internship
    Coordinator.

The Work

  • Work at the internship site for 120 hours to receive 3 units of credit (80 hours for 2 units of credit, and 40 hours for 1 credit). 
  • During a regular semester 120 hours average to 8 hours per week; during summer semester, 120 hours average to 20 hours per week.
  • The three credits (120 hours) may be committed within one semester, or may be spread over two semesters (1 credit = 40 hours, 2 credits = 80 hours).
  • In addition to their agency assignments, students are required to meet for 1 hour every other week  with the Internship Coordinator, and to submit to the Coordinator at the end of the semester a brief log of their work as well as a short term paper.
 

Internship Evaluation

  • The hours must be completed by the last day of classes during the semester of the
    internship.
  • All internships are graded A-F.
  • Students must receive a satisfactory and mid-term and final evaluation from his/her supervisor at the internship site, as well as a satisfactory evaluation from the Internship Coordinator.
